1683

First European settlement in the area, with the Lenape people having inhabited the region for thousands of years prior.

1800

Metuchen incorporated as a township, named after a Lenape chief called Matochshegan.

1900

Incorporated as a borough. By this time, 400 of 1,786 residents were daily commuters to New York City via the railroad.

1907

Thomas Edison, who lived nearby in Menlo Park, frequently visited Metuchen. The area's intellectual community earned it the nickname 'The Brainy Borough.'
